My Dad, Steve, was the first of three generations to attend West.  I was the class of '90 and now my daughter will be the class of '16.  It was because of my Dad's reputation that the first time I met Coach Pete he saw my name and said, "great, another Veldheer.  I hope you're not like your dad".  From the stories I hear he was quite honary in high school.  My dad went on to do two tours in 'Nam.  While he was there he was exposed to Agent Orange which caused a few bouts with cancer.  In 2011 the cancer finally won.  I miss you Dad.

Steve was my brother.
I can still remember as a youngster watching him run cross country and track as well as pole vaulting.

He was very competitive all his life.  Life after Nam was never the same for Steve.  He enlisted in the Navy to keep his older brother from going to the frontline in Nam.  Thanks to Steve's sacrafice we were able to enjoy Dave for many more years before a heart attack took him from us while running  in Virginia.  Steve had a tough life with many ups and downs, however he did not give up his fight for life until 3 days before he died.  He raised a wonderful Son who went on to follow in his dad's foot steps as a runner at West.  This year his Granddaughter Kara joins the Veldheer legacy of running cross country  For West.  You did well big brother.  Rest in Peace.

Sue
